How to stay safe as a senior: Important safety recommendations

Everyday risks are often easy to overlook. Protect yourself by staying alert and aware of your surroundings. Use these tips to help reduce potential safety hazards.
1. Increase your safety when you’re at home or out and about
To stay safe and prevent falls, it’s important to identify and avoid obstacles, uneven surfaces and wet or snowy areas whenever possible. Removing or avoiding tripping hazards, such as clutter, loose extension cords and unsecured rugs, can also help reduce the risk of accidents. Using stability aids like walkers, canes or grab bars can provide additional support when needed. Parking in well-lit areas enhances visibility and safety while keeping emergency numbers readily available — including contact information for emergency responders, healthcare providers and friends or family — ensures quick access to help in case of an emergency.
2. Lower your risk of fraud by recognizing fraudulent situations and safeguarding your personal information
To protect yourself from fraud, be cautious of unsolicited emails, phone calls or text messages requesting personal or financial information. Scammers often create a sense of urgency, pressuring you to act quickly by sending money or sharing sensitive details. Never provide any form of payment or personal information unless you are certain of the requester's identity — always verify by calling them back using trusted contact details. Be skeptical of offers that seem too good to be true, such as promises of large sums of money or once-in-a-lifetime deals. Avoid purchasing items advertised in unsolicited emails, and never open suspicious attachments or links. Additionally, safeguard your accounts by using strong, unique passwords, updating them regularly and never sharing them with others.
3. Follow safe medication practices to protect your health
To manage your medications safely, it’s important to carry a list of all your current medications and dosages, including over-the-counter medications and supplements. Never share your medications with others, as they are prescribed specifically for you. Be sure to review your medication list with your healthcare provider during each visit to ensure everything is up to date. If you notice any changes or differences in your medications, notify your healthcare provider or pharmacist right away. To help you remember to take your medications on time, consider using medication reminders or pillboxes.
4. Practice safe medication disposal
Easily dispose of your unwanted, unused or expired medications by visiting a Walgreens safe medication disposal kiosk where you can simply drop them off. For convenience, nearly 1,500 Walgreens pharmacies offer these kiosks. Find the nearest location.
