Can men take biotin?

Biotin is a B vitamin used by the body for many functions, such as turning the foods you eat into energy. Some men take biotin supplements to promote hair growth or prevent hair loss, although research into the benefits of biotin supplements is inconclusive. While biotin has not been shown to pose adverse health effects in men, there are some factors to consider before you start taking biotin supplements.
Is biotin safe for men?
There is no evidence suggesting that too much biotin is harmful to a person's health, and biotin has not been shown to have toxic effects in men, even at high levels.
Men should be aware, however, that taking biotin supplements may affect the results of certain lab tests. High biotin intake can interfere with thyroid lab tests, making it seem as though you have a thyroid disorder when you don't. High doses of biotin have also been associated with false readings in certain heart lab work. For these reasons, it’s important to tell your healthcare provider if you are taking biotin supplements.
Does biotin work for men's hair?
Some people have a rare disorder that causes biotin deficiency, called biotinidase deficiency. People with this condition may experience hair loss and brittle nails, and biotin supplementation can help resolve these symptoms. However, there is currently no strong evidence to suggest that biotin supplementation is helpful for hair, skin and nail growth in otherwise healthy men.
